In addition to the forestry work, cameras will be installed connected to the Fire Control Center

Benidorm begins fire prevention actions in El Moralet park

01 February 2024
Parque El Moralet en Benidorm

Benidorm City Council has begun fire prevention work in El Moralet Park, an action that complements those previously carried out for the adaptation and creation of trails included in the Sustainable and Integrative Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI) as one of the main projects.

Now, the recovery of this environment has entered a new phase focused on fire prevention, which will also entail a review and expansion of the park's interior signage, the creation of a perimeter firebreak throughout the park, the installation of protection barriers using lever-type fences, as well as the restoration to their initial state of the roads affected by the vehicle traffic necessary for the execution of the works. A municipal delegation headed by Mayor Toni Pérez, together with councillors and responsible technicians, visited the area this morning to witness the first actions that are already being carried out by the company Grupo Bertolín.

According to the project, the forestry work will consist of carrying out clearings and removing the existing herbaceous, shrubby and tree vegetation as a preventive treatment against forest fires. Pine trees are also being pruned to eliminate dry or diseased branches and remove the lowest ones on the tree to avoid drastic pruning that compromises the subsequent growth and development of the tree. Likewise, some dead or dying conifers or those affected by pests or diseases and deformed that are scattered throughout the park are being cut down.

Regarding signage, the installation has been planned, at the five main entrances, signs with indications of restrictions and recommendations for correct use of the environment and the prevention of fires.

Regarding the fire cameras, the installation will be carried out at the eight entrances to the park. These devices have a rechargeable battery and solar panel and will be placed on columns eight meters high. In total, there will be eleven cameras that will be installed.

Finally, the removal of some garbage collections and rubbish dumps detected throughout the park is also planned, as well as the adaptation to their original state, as already mentioned, of the cycle paths and vehicular cycle paths.

Toni Pérez highlighted that Benidorm "continues to invest in this park, which is a great green lung for the city" and stressed that, although it is already conditioned after the first investments made, "now the fundamental objective is fire prevention." To do this, he indicated, "on the one hand, cleaning, clearing and removal of trees that were susceptible to burning quickly and, on the other, the installation of fire cameras for prevention is carried out."

There will be, he specified, “eleven cameras powered by solar energy, wirelessly connected to the security and firefighting services to have the greatest speed and diligence in case of need.”

El Moralet Park “has been enjoyed by thousands of people since its recovery and that invites us to continue investing in it to complete a great project, a great park, which with the passage of time is improving and has become a reference in the design of the green coastline that we proposed in our strategy since October 2015,” the mayor added.

The entire intervention will be completed before the summer, as confirmed by the Councilor for Parks and Gardens, José Ramón González de Zárate, who has also announced that the installation of the double track of the TRAM from La Vila Joiosa to Benidorm by Ferrocarrils of the Generalitat Valenciana, which has already begun, “will also entail the renaturalization of the entire environment of the TRAM route as it passes through El Moralet.”
