Benidorm begins environmental activities this Saturday to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity in urban parks

Benidorm inicia este sábado las actividades ambientales para concienciar sobre la importancia de la biodiversidad en los parques urbanos

The Parks and Gardens Department of Benidorm City Council will hold the first of its scheduled environmental activities this coming Saturday, April 18th. These activities, which run until June, aim to raise awareness about the role of flora and fauna in parks, biodiversity, and the importance of caring for the environment.

This first activity will be a guided biodiversity walk through urban parks. According to the Councillor for Parks and Gardens, José Ramón González de Zárate, the objective is "to showcase the flora and fauna present in municipal green spaces, promoting respect for and conservation of urban biodiversity."

Entitled "Benidorm en ruta," the activity will depart at 9:30 a.m. from the Óscar Esplá Auditorium in L'Aigüera Park. From there, participants will travel to Foietes Park, then to El Moralet Park, and finally to Séquia Mare Park. During the route, participants will identify urban birds and pollinating insects, and learn about native flora. “All of this will be accompanied by an explanation of the ecological function of urban parks as biodiversity refuges and the role of green spaces in improving the urban climate and environmental quality,” stated the Councilor for Parks and Gardens, José Ramón González de Zárate.

The activity will last approximately three hours and is suitable for all ages, “provided they can ride a bicycle or use adapted equipment.” Therefore, the councillor indicated that participants “should bring their own bicycles and water.”

The next activity this month, which will be announced shortly, will be a workshop on building nest boxes and insect hotels. “With this, we want to encourage the presence of beneficial fauna in parks and, at the same time, raise public awareness of their importance for ecological balance,” said González de Zárate.
