The work is part of the second phase of renovation of Maravall and Jaime I streets included in the EDUSI

Benidorm begins the assembly of the elevator on Jilguero Street that will connect Jaime I Avenue with Tordo Street

Benidorm inicia el montaje del ascensor de la calle Jilguero que unirá Jaime I con la calle Tordo

Benidorm City Council, through the Department of Urban Scene, has already begun the assembly and installation of the elevator on Jilguero Street that will connect Jaime I Avenue with Tordo Street, promoting better accessibility for people with reduced mobility and the elderly and favouring the revitalization of the area while preventing it from degrading.

The works are part of the second phase of the renovation of the public space around Maravall Street and Jaime I Avenue, actions that are included in the Sustainable and Integrative Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI) and that for the most part are already finished.

In the case of the elevator, its installation includes a metal walkway at its endpoint that will connect with a ramp to the final section of Tordo Street, so access from Jaime I to Tordo Street can be done without architectural barriers. However, the stairs are maintained, although two new blocks will allow entry using the ramp or the stairs.

The Councilor for Urban Scene, Francis Muñoz, highlighted that the elevator “will resolve accessibility and prevent the slope from causing inconvenience to pedestrians.” The first works consist of the assembly of the elevator structure, which will be completed and operational before the start of summer.

Muñoz has also indicated that the main benefit of the work will be "the creation of a completely accessible itinerary for people who reside in this area of the city, as well as for people with reduced mobility who will be prevented from having to make a “great detour to save the stairs and the existing unevenness.” According to Muñoz, another of the objectives pursued is “the revitalization of this neighbourhood while preventing the degradation of an area where many elderly people with limited resources live.”

EDUSI's action in this area has made it possible to renovate the streets that connect Jaime I Avenue with Maravall Street. Thus, new sidewalks with non-slip pavement and no sidewalks have been installed on Tordo Street, which has made it possible to eliminate unevenness and stairs. Gorrión Street has been transformed into a pedestrian space with large-calibre trees. These works also provide for the installation of accessible street furniture. They have a total investment in this phase of 585,700 euros.
