Benidorm City Council has started today the installation of some 250 new lights in the old town area of the city, an action that will involve the renovation of all the streetlights and the implementation of a remote management system.

This intervention is part of the first phase of the energy efficiency project that is co-financed with European funds and that provides for the renovation of more than 50% of public lighting in Benidorm and achieve more than 70% energy savings.

This first phase is limited to the central area. Thus, as explained by the Councilor for Public Space, José Ramón González de Zárate, the action began in El Calvari "and now we begin with the old town in the space that goes from Paseo de la Carretera to the beach, Alameda street, Condestable Zaragoza, Senyoría square, Santa Faz street, Alicante, Mayor, etc.”

The luminaires that will be installed are Fernandino style with 'led' technology, much more efficient than the current ones and will have a remote management system that will allow the light flow to be switched on, off or regulated individually or jointly depending on the different night schedules and types of roads, adjusting to citizen needs.

The councillor has specified that the luminaire and the arms of some 250 streetlights with a light output of between 30 and 50 watts will be changed. "In two weeks the action will be finished, with which we gain in energy and economic savings, in addition to improving the image of the old town, which is an emblematic area of Benidorm".

The project, drawn up by municipal technicians, is in tune with what is established in the City Council's Sustainable Energy Action Plan (PAES), which has made it possible to renew part of the public lighting in recent years. It is divided into three phases, the first of which corresponds to the Central area, which includes the historic quarter, its expansion and the Foietes-Colonia Madrid and Imalsa-Els Tolls neighbourhoods.

The global investment of the project, which takes place between 2021 and 2023, amounts to 6,014,578.57 euros and has a grant from the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), dependent on the Ministry for Ecological Transition, of 3,007,289.28 euros of European funds.

Benidorm project was selected by the IDAE within a call for projects from local entities that favor the transition to a low-carbon economy, within the framework of ERDF Operational Program for Sustainable Growth 2014-2020.

"We continue to bet on the implementation of all the technological advances that allow us to be more efficient and respectful with the environment every day, reducing CO2 emissions and thus improving the quality of life of our citizens" said González de Zárate.
