Mobility begins to install 50 new bicycle racks at points claimed by cyclists and students

24 January 2017
Movilidad empieza a instalar 50 aparcabicicletas nuevos en puntos reclamados por ciclistas y estudiantes

Each fork can hold 7 or 8 bikes

By 2017 you want to put another half hundred of forks

The department of Mobility has begun to install 50 new bicycle racks in various parts of the city in response to requests made by cyclist clubs in Benidorm, users and representatives of students in the Municipal School Council, as reported on Tuesday the councilman of the department, José Ramón González de Zárate. The councilor has indicated that these bicycle stands have the capacity for "seven or eight bicycles well placed", and have been "at zero cost" for the City Council assumed by the concessionaire of urban furniture.

De Zárate explained that the location of these bicycle racks has been agreed with the cycling clubs, taking into account the city's bike-lane in the city that exceeds 50 kilometers.

At the time of placing these forks "it has given priority to the school complex of Salto del Agua, attended by more than 5,000 students." Thus, three units have been installed in front of IES Bernat de Sarrià, three others in IES Almadrava, two to serve IES Pere Mª Orts i Bosch and two others at the UNED. We also wanted to give service to the Palau d'Esports l'Illa, where we will install three bicycle racks; at the Palace of Justice a unit will be located; and at Antonio López football field in the Rincón de Loix, where three forks will be installed.

The rest will be implemented in the following streets and avenues: Juan Fuster Zaragoza -3 units- Atmella del Mar with Mediterranean -2-, Atmella el Mar with Madrid -3-, Mediterranean with Europe -2-, Alfonso Puchades at the Height of the polyclinic -2-, Station -2-, Beniardá at the height of the headquarters of the Tax Agency -2-, in El Cruce -2-, Tomás Ortuño with Uranus -2-, Park of Elche -3-, Avenida Jaime I with Spanish Armada -3-, Spanish Armada with Xixo -3-, Villajoyosa with Vicente Llorca Alós -2-, and Paseo Tamarindos -2-.

De Zárate detailed that "we will progressively install more bicycle racks" to serve users and also to prevent them from parking in the street furniture. The prevision is to request another 50 units for 2017 and another half a hundred for next year.

The head of Mobility pointed out that this action is linked "to the promotion of the use of bicycles for which the City Council has chosen to make Benidorm a more sustainable, healthier and more avant-garde city." In this regard, he recalled that in addition to expanding the bike lane, the work has been done jointly with the Town Hall of l'Alfàs del Pi to put in bike paths in Serra Gelada and doing the same in Finestrat. In addition, we are waiting for the Generalitat to transfer to Benidorm the old route of TRAM for its reconversion in Via Verde for pedestrian and cyclist use.

Motion of Compromis- Los Verdes

The councilor for Mobility pointed out that about a month ago the City Hall received the 50 bicycle racks that have begun to be settled, and has clarified that if so far have not been able to settle is because the municipal technicians has been devoting to placing bollards and rubber in the trees and the new playgrounds for children.

De Zárate referred to the motion submitted by the group Compromís-Los Verdes claiming just the installation of bicycle racks and has said that this proposal is already being carried out.
