Benidorm will stabilize the slopes of Tossal to avoid possible landslides

Benidorm estabilizará los taludes del Tossal para evitar posibles desprendimientos

Benidorm City Council will begin in the coming weeks the stabilization works of the slopes of the northeast zone of Tossal de La Cala, which falls on Luarca street, to avoid possible landslides. The mayor and the councilor of Urbanism - both in functions, Toni Pérez and Lourdes Caselles, have reported that this project will invest 271,116.84 euros with the aim of eliminating "the cause and damage currently suffered by the area of the slope, preventing them from reproducing ".

Pérez explained that these jobs will be carried out by a company specialized in embankment containment and will be carried out on "a slope with a vertical drop of up to 48 meters".

The first phase of the works will focus on "cleaning up and adapting the slope, eliminating the blocks of rock that are on the ground or detached". Then "the triple twisting mesh that is currently on the slope" will be replaced, and "permanent bolts stitching the most unstable surface blocks" will be installed. It will also be placed "a double mesh that connects all the heads of the bolts" with two different types of network: one of greater resistance that prevents the fall of future detachments, and another of less opening that picks up the possible fragments of rock of more size small".

Given the complexity of using ancillary facilities on the slope due to the significant difference in level, "the teams will work overlapped by the slope and properly anchored to ensure the safety of both personnel and existing buildings."

The mayor has indicated that these works will generate "inconvenience" especially to the nearest neighbors, although it has affected that it is a very necessary action "with which we pursue the stabilization of the slopes is final." Both the mayor and Caselles have indicated that this stabilization should be carried out without delay so that it is concluded before the arrival of possible torrential rains in autumn, since "landslides usually occur on a recurrent basis when there are episodes of precipitation."
