The City Council hopes to have the Action Plan before the end of the year

Benidorm will develop a Global Road Safety Plan to reduce accidents

25 May 2018
Benidorm elaborará un Plan Global de Seguridad Vial para reducir la accidentalidad

Benidorm City Council is going to draw up a Global Road Safety Plan with the aim of "reducing accidents", and that will complement those already developed by the Government of Spain and the Generalitat Valenciana. The councilman of Mobility, José Ramón González de Zárate, has indicated that this document "will mark us where to invest and where to act to solve the road accident problems that may be in Benidorm", and has advanced that "the intention is that this Global Plan it is approved before the end of the year so that it can include in the municipal budget of 2019 financing for the first actions to be carried out ".

De Zárate has indicated that the Plan will be entrusted to a consultant and that work is expected to begin in a couple of weeks.

The preparation of the Plan will be carried out in four stages. The first one will be the one of 'Diagnosis and Characterization', in which it will be determined what is the current scenario and the possible problems of road safety that occur in the city. To this end, we will work in collaboration with the Local Police Attestation Section, "studying all traffic accidents registered in the city in the last two years" and compiling the mobility indicators and road safety actions adopted since December. 2016

Once the diagnosis is made, the phase of 'Formulation of objectives and proposals' will begin. Based on the generic objectives inherent to any Road Safety Plan, the local objectives will be added and the actions to be developed will be considered.

The councilor has indicated that among the generic objectives are: guarantee the coexistence of all the displacement systems; pacify traffic and promote sustainable mobility; reduce the number and consequences of moped and motorcycle accidents; or increase the protection of pedestrians, cyclists and people with reduced mobility.

Subsequently and after that phase, the Action Plan will be drawn up, "which will mark what needs to be done" to achieve those objectives and which is expected to be ready for the month of October or November. In this Plan, the actions to be implemented each year and their cost will be programmed temporarily. The fourth and final stage will be the 'Evaluation and Monitoring', which will verify the usefulness and effectiveness of the measures adopted and the possible redefinition of local objectives and new actions to be implemented.

De Zárate explained that the Global Road Safety Plan "will be taken to the Mobility Council" for its members to evaluate it and make the contributions they consider. Then, it will be the plenary session that must approve the document.
