Benidorm surpasses glass recycling by almost 10% and renews its "Green Flag" status for the fifth year

16 October 2025
Benidorm supera en casi un 10% el reciclaje de vidrio y revalida por quinto año la ‘Bandera Verde’

Benidorm has once again revalidated the Green Flag, awarded annually by Ecovidrio, which recognises the efforts of the local hospitality industry and city councils in recycling glass containers and combating climate change. This non-profit organisation, responsible for managing glass container recycling, communicated this to the Benidorm City Council after verifying that the city increased the total volume of glass container collection for recycling by 9.8% during June, July, and August compared to the previous year, also ranking as the municipality with the highest score in the Valencian Community.

The city already won this award in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, and has now achieved it for the fifth consecutive time. According to Ecovidrio, obtaining this recognition is due to "the teamwork of the City Council, the local citizens, and the hotel and catering industry," which has allowed Benidorm to "continue making strides in the transition toward a circular economy and in the fight against climate change," in addition to becoming "an example of the green recovery of the hospitality industry."

In total, more than 300 hospitality establishments in the city participated, contributing their part to this fifth edition of the #GreenBandrasMovement. This initiative recognises the commitment of municipalities and their hotel sector to glass container recycling, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

According to data from Ecovidrio's Deputy Director of Eastern Zone Management, Roberto Fuentes, Benidorm collected a total of 1,248,620 kilos of glass in June, July, and August of this year, representing an increase of almost 10% compared to the previous year. The recycling of these glass containers has allowed the city to obtain a score of 3,353 points, making it the municipality with the highest score in the Valencian Community. This will also be rewarded with a cleanup effort in a natural area coordinated with the organisation Paisaje Limpio.

The Councillor for Environment, Mónica Gómez, stated that "thanks to the recycling of these glass containers, our city has managed to reduce CO2 emissions by 724 tons." Therefore, she expressed her gratitude for "the massive response of the hospitality sector once again this year, which is key to achieving this award", and noted that

"Benidorm competed with around 40 Valencian municipalities, and more than 150 municipalities from five autonomous communities and 15,000 hospitality establishments participated nationally."
