The technicians study the draft submitted by the company to which the construction of the morgue was awarded to adapt the building to the new Road infraestructure

Benidorm starts the process to write the Sant Jaume cemetery extension project

04 February 2020
Benidorm inicia los trámites para redactar el proyecto de ampliación del cementerio de Sant Jaume

Benidorm City Council has begun the process to write Sant Jaume Cemetery Expansion project, based on the Special Cemetery Plan already approved and waiting for the Ministry of Development to solve the Environmental Impact Statement of the Roundabout of Vial Discotecas –Linked to this extension-. As explained by the spokeswoman for the local government and City Councilor for Planning, Lourdes Caselles, after several meetings, on January 27, the councillor of Cemeteries, Angela Llorca, sent a letter requesting to the relevant area the beginning of the procedures for the drafting of this draft. A commission that the owner of Works, José Ramón González de Zárate, has already moved to the Engineering area.

Caselles has pointed out that "we are aware of the need to expand the cemetery of Sant Jaume and do it with sufficient foresight to have a much greater burial capacity and for a much longer period of time", since the space available for niches In the current facilities it is practically sold out. At this point, she recalled that "since Ángela Llorca assumed the competence of Cemeteries, a heading for the construction of new niches blocks has been included in all municipal budgets." In fact, in the last four years "about 400 have been created"; and with the construction of each block "we have proceeded to adapt and improve the environment".

The councillor of Urban Planning has advanced that "within the expansion of the cemetery, we will take into account the unfinished building that is next to the entrance of the cemetery", which today referred to the PSOE municipal group in a press conference. Caselles has pointed out that "our intention is to finish that building, which can be used for different purposes and can accommodate various services."

She has also clarified that the Special Cemetery Plan includes the construction and management of a funeral home, which would be integrated into the cemetery. In this regard, he has indicated that "for many years there is an administrative concession for the funeral home, as well as a project that suited it."

However, "until this Special Plan was definitively approved, there was a modification of the Road Infraestructure Law, which caused changes in the distance of the public domain and easement areas, and fundamentally in the building line". When the distance of the building line was extended to 100 meters, “the plot in which the concession for the construction and management of the funeral home has been awarded has been practically affected by 50%”.

Given this circumstance, and after several meetings, "we require the winning company to submit a preliminary draft to adapt the funeral home to the new Highway Law." This preliminary project is already "in municipal headquarters", where "it is being studied by the areas of Architecture, Engineering and Contracting to verify that it is adapted to the administrative concession." In the event that the draft “is favorably informed by municipal technicians, it will be time to present the basic project” and give the green light to the construction of the funeral home.

The new building line does not affect the constructions already executed and consolidated.
