A period is now open for the municipalities to submit the proposal sent by the INE

Benidorm reaches its historical maximum population with nearly 74,600 inhabitants

The city of Benidorm has reached its maximum population recognized by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) with nearly 74,600 inhabitants. This was stated by the mayor, Toni Pérez, who explained that “the proposal sent by the INE sets for Benidorm a population registered on January 1 of this year of 74,588 inhabitants, almost 2,250 more people than in 2023 and 820 more than in 2013, the date on which Benidorm had marked its previous population ceiling.”

The mayor highlighted that "these figures confirm that there is growing interest not only in residing in Benidorm but also in registering in our city, something to which the progressive improvement of public services, economic opportunities and in general have contributed in terms of employment offered by a leading tourist destination, as well as different measures implemented in recent years at the municipal level that have functioned as incentives.” This is the case with the parking sticker for residents, the Citizen Card or different public price discounts.

“As a city, Benidorm is an engine of job creation and an economic driver and this potential is reflected in the number of inhabitants. It is a slow but strong growth sustained over time and has made us go from just over 66,000 inhabitants to more than 74,500 in just a few years,” he added.

Toni Pérez has specified that "this figure close to 74,600 inhabitants is not definitive and could increase, since a period is now open for the City Councils to make allegations to the population established by the INE since the figure that the municipalities consider in their standards are usually higher than the one initially set by the INE.”

This discrepancy in figures is marked, fundamentally, by the foreign population who, depending on nationality, must renew or confirm their registration; a procedure that not all residents complete promptly.

Toni Pérez has highlighted that "the efficient management carried out by the Statistics Department, which monthly sends and reports on all census movements, has allowed the municipal figures to be adjusted more each year with those of the INE, reducing the discrepancies to 2.8 %, several points below the percentages of previous years.”

The mayor has advanced that the "Statistics department will work to ensure that the highest percentage of the dissident population is recognized as a legal population, to increase our official registry." At this point, he has stated that "the objective is still to reach 75,000 inhabitants, that threshold that would mean leaping a 'big city' and, with this, having the possibility of accessing more financing from the State."
