1,166 women murdered in Spain by their partners and ex-partners since 2003

Benidorm pays tribute to the last victim of sexist violence in Spain

03 November 2022
Minuto de silencio en el Ayuntamiento de Benidorm.

This noon a minute of silence has taken place before the main door of Benidorm City Hall as a sign of rejection for the murder this Tuesday of a 30-year-old woman in the town of Valencia de Alcántara in Cáceres.

With the mayor, Toni Pérez, and the Councilor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, at the head, the municipal corporation wanted to pay tribute to the thirty-sixth victim of sexist violence in our country so far this year.

The woman, of Moroccan origin, was murdered by her husband, of the same nationality, in the presence of the youngest of their minor children, a 14-month-old baby. After the tragic act, the man confessed the crime by phone to the Civil Guard and has been, since then, at the disposal of the court.

With this, there are already 1,166 women who have lost their lives at the hands of their partners or ex-partners in Spain since the statistics began to be compiled in 2003.

The Department of Equality recalls that Benidorm City Council has personnel specialized in gender violence to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. Likewise, it reiterates once again that the victims have the free telephone number 016, which leaves no trace on the telephone bill, although it is advisable to eliminate it from the mobile call log. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and in 52 languages.
