This is a public awareness campaign about the importance of glass recycling

Benidorm once again hosts Ecovidrio's 'Eco-Friendly Festivals' initiative during the local festivities

05 November 2025
Benidorm vuelve a acoger la iniciativa ‘Fiestas con eco’ de Ecovidrio durante las Festes Majors Patronals

Ecovidrio, the non-profit organisation responsible for managing the recycling of glass packaging waste in Spain, in collaboration with Benidorm City Council, will once again run the "Fiestas con eco" (Festivities with Eco) awareness campaign during the Festes Majors Patronals (local festivities) to promote glass recycling among festival-goers and residents. The initiative aims to surpass the glass recycling rate set by Ecovidrio for the month of November compared to the same period of the previous year. If the municipality achieves this goal, Ecovidrio will award it the "Fiestas con eco" prize, which recognises the involvement of citizens and festival-goers in the campaign to achieve more sustainable celebrations.

To reinforce the campaign, environmental educators will visit the municipality and tour the main areas where the festival activities take place to inform people about the challenge and encourage them to recycle glass and participate in games and challenges in exchange for a backpack featuring the "Fiestas con eco" campaign logo.

Specifically, environmental educators will be present on Monday, November 10th, and Tuesday, November 11th, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the streets where the festival groups have their headquarters. Additionally, festival-goers can upload their most sustainable photos to social media using the hashtag #FiestasConEco.

This year marks the continuation of ‘Fiestas con Eco Network,’ a network of municipalities committed to sustainability during their festivals and dedicated to improving their environmental practices year after year. This network features a website that will showcase all participating municipalities, including Benidorm, along with the initiatives they are implementing for more sustainable festival events.

Environmental benefits of glass recycling

The glass deposited in the containers is 100% recycled and used to manufacture new containers, indefinitely and without losing its original properties. By recycling glass, we prevent the growth of landfills.

Furthermore, recycling glass is a key element in the fight against climate change. By using cullet—recycled glass—in the manufacture of new containers, we avoid the extraction of raw materials from nature, preventing soil erosion and deforestation. Likewise, it minimises CO2 emissions in the manufacturing process and saves energy.

For almost thirty years, Ecovidrio has designed an effective, efficient, and sustainable recycling system, which has the commitment and trust of nearly 6,000 packaging companies that make glass recycling possible through the Green Dot system. This system has allowed seven out of every ten glass containers in Spain to be recycled today.
