The hydraulic efficiency of Benidorm water treatment plant is greater than 99%

Benidorm guarantees the quality of the water in its drinking network

23 March 2022
Benidorm garantiza la calidad del agua de su red de potable

The investment policy for the renovation, improvement, modernization and digitization of the Benidorm City Council Potable Water system network and facilities, together with Hidraqua, the company that manages it, offers guarantees of supply and quality of service throughout the year in an infrastructure in which 8.8 million euros have been invested.

The reference and success of the Benidorm tourist destination require facilities linked to the integral water cycle that must be adequately sized and adapted to modern technology to be able to meet the demand both in winter and summer and to be able to vary the treated flow, currently being able to go from treating from a minimum flow rate of 208 litres per second to 750 litres per second immediately and automatically. These rates are necessary since in the summer months the average demand is 500 litres per second, in addition, it is sized to continue serving the expected growth of Benidorm for the next twenty years.

A key element of the process is that Benidorm plant, through the digitization and machining of processes, is not only capable of adapting to demand but is also able to seek greater water and energy efficiency, guaranteeing the quality of the water at all times.

Also noteworthy is the security component; especially the technical staff involved in the process. The handling of the chemical products that intervene in the purification is carried out automatically, without the need for the operating personnel to intervene directly. The Benidorm plant only needs supervision and complies with the European Directive that affects this aspect.

Among the most significant things is that the plant works with a hydraulic efficiency of over 99 per cent. This implies that in the purification process only less than 1 per cent of the water that reaches the installation is lost; which is in line with the also efficient distribution system, the most outstanding at the European level, with a percentage higher than 95 per cent.

The improvements introduced in the water purification system in Benidorm ensure that, in episodes of strong rains, the dragging of land that this type of precipitation entails, Benidorm has always been able to guarantee water in perfect sanitary conditions, both for its inhabitants as for tourism.

One of the improvements introduced in the process has been in the field of digitization. With it, self-regulation and adaptation to water quality processes are achieved, since the plant receives water from different sources. The digitization modules manage to determine the treatments to ensure that Benidorm has water that exceeds the strictest quality controls.

The neighbouring municipality of Finestrat is connected to Benidorm DWTP to avoid episodes of turbidity; Both towns signed the agreement that establishes the flows to supply La Cala, the commercial and industrial area and the urbanizations around Sierra Cortina in the event of restrictions.
