The number of existing niches will be increased in San Jaume's cemetery before the end of the expansion works that are being carried out on a plot attached to the northern area of the current one. To that end, Benidorm City Council yesterday held a technical meeting with the construction management to assess the new interventions in the cemetery.

Mayor Toni Pérez attended the appointment, accompanied by the Councilor for Cemeteries, Ángela Llorca, several municipal technicians and those responsible for the company that carried out the expansion work.

The cemetery was built in the 70s on a plot of 41,700 square meters in the Marxassos area "but the growth of the number of burials have made it necessary for us to act with foresight" explained the mayor.

In this sense, the creation of an island with 48 niches has already been planned and will be completed in approximately one month. Once this is finished, the construction of another island with a capacity for 96 units will begin in another plot of the cemetery. The goal is to reach 250 units before the end of July.

An intervention that follows the path marked out since 2015, according to which 520 units had been built until last year "making the most of the space that was unoccupied".

“Faced with the evolution of the number of burials, we had to act quickly. During the last legislature and the current one, we have invested a lot in the cemetery," Pérez pointed out.

Regarding the expansion of the cemetery, he has said, "it is a very important infrastructure that required action with foresight and that is why we are executing it now so that it will be completed in 2023."

The expansion will allow the space of the cemetery to grow by 50,000 square meters and provide it with the necessary infrastructure such as more parking spaces, burial units and a municipal mortuary. "What we do is provide the cemetery with much more capacity to continue the plan that we began a few years ago, we doubling the space" added the mayor.

The budget for the expansion works amounts to 3.1 million euros and is multi-annual. "The expansion will allow the city to have a larger cemetery for the next three decades" Pérez concluded.
