Benidorm condemns the terrorist attacks and sympathizes with the victims of Barcelona and Cambrils bombings

18 August 2017
Benidorm condena la barbarie terrorista y se solidariza con las víctimas del atentado de Barcelona y Cambrils

The mayor has moved his condolences to both cities and remarks that "before the unreason and barbarism we must continue betting on freedom, democracy and peaceful coexistence"

Hundreds of people have gathered this afternoon at Plaza SSMM Reyes de España to condemn the terrorist attack and to express solidarity with the victims of Barcelona and this morning in Cambrils (Tarragona), which until now have had a balance of 14 dead people, 13 in the capital, Barcelona and one in the town of Costa Daurada, Cambrils. Both bombings also leave more than a hundred injured people.

For five minutes silence has been observed in memory of the victims in a rally led by the mayor, Toni Pérez; and in which members of the groups of the corporation have participated; the national deputy Gerardo Camps; Senators Agustín Almodóbar and Adela Pedrosa; representatives of business, social and neighborhood groups; residents and tourists who with their presence have shown their repulsion of both attacks, claimed by the Islamic State.

After the rally, the mayor said that "the first thing that concerns us is the memory of people who have lost their lives, their families and the wounded," and added that after episodes so miserable like those that occurred yesterday "we have to continue betting on freedom and democracy". "What these villains want is not only to bitter our lives, but to change our habits, and they will not get it," he said.

Pérez has pointed out that before "the unreason" and "barbarism" that guides terrorists we must "take all preventive measures." In this regard, he recalled that Spain has been in alert for 4 months and that "all preventive measures marked by the state" are being implemented permanently "in Benidorm, and indicated that" the rapid response " yesterday of the bodies and security forces "show that they are vigilant."

On behalf of Benidorm, Pérez has moved the condolences to the mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, and  Cambrils, Camí Mendoza, in letters that have brought "the unconditional support and unbreakable solidarity" of the city with " the Catalonian people, their authorities, law enforcement and emergency teams that have helped and cared for the victims. " "We will face those who seek to take away freedom, democracy and peaceful coexistence that we will continue to defend," the letters conclude.

For two days, the flags will continue at half-mast in mourning.
