Benidorm City Council again expressed its condemnation against gender-based violence following the latest gender-based crime confirmed by the Government Delegation against Gender Violence against a 44-year-old woman, murdered by her partner in Tarragona. The silent rally took place at noon outside City Hall, led by Benidorm Mayor Toni Pérez, along with the Councillor for Equality, Ángela Zaragozí, and members of the local council.

The woman, a Spanish national, was murdered on April 18 by her partner, also a 43-year-old Spaniard. Hours after the crime, he confessed to the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan police) that he had killed his wife and that her body was found in the trunk of the vehicle he was driving. The victim had a minor son from a previous relationship, and her partner had been previously charged with gender-based violence.

With the confirmation of this case, this is the ninth woman murdered by her partner or ex-partner this year. The number of women murdered due to gender-based violence in Spain since 2003 has reached 1,303 victims. This data began to be collected that year. The number of children orphaned due to gender-based violence against their mothers has risen to eight so far this year and to 477 since 2013.

The Department of Equality reminds us that Benidorm City Council has staff specialised in violence against women to provide free advice to any woman who feels threatened. They also reiterate that victims can access the free 016 hotline, which leaves no trace on their phone bill, although it is advisable to delete it from their cell phone call logs. This service is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and in 52 languages.

Likewise, in an emergency, you can call 112 or the emergency numbers of the National Police (091) and the Civil Guard (062). If a call is not possible and a dangerous situation arises, you can use the ALERTCOPS app, which will send an alert signal with geolocation to the police. All of these assistance methods can be activated by the victim and also by anyone who knows of or suspects a case of gender-based violence. It is a duty of all society.
