Benidorm completes the works to improve surface drainage at the junction with Severo Ochoa and Camí dels Torrers

Benidorm finaliza las obras de mejora del drenaje superficial en el cruce de Severo Ochoa con el Camí dels Torrers

Benidorm City Council, through the Water Cycle Department, has completed the works to improve the surface drainage at the junction of Avenida Severo Ochoa with Camí dels Torrers. This action was considered “very necessary” to avoid the “recurring problems of water accumulation in the area during rain episodes” due to the lack of a storm drain network.

This situation generated significant problems such as inconvenience for pedestrians and residents, interruptions and difficulties in road traffic and progressive damage to the road surface. “For this reason, it was essential to undertake this action to reduce the recurrent flooding at this intersection while improving the safety and fluidity of road and pedestrian traffic and renewing the deteriorated asphalt” explained the Water Cycle Councillor, José Ramón González de Zárate.

The intervention's budget was 106,842.27 euros. The concessionaire Hidraqua carried it out, charging the Investment Fund of the Municipal Service of Drinking Water and Sewerage.

The main lines of action have been improving the surface drainage and asphalting and paving the affected area. The hydraulic solutions presented will solve the problems with the services, such as the deficiency in stormwater infrastructure. In addition, the replacement of the affected services has been limited to paving part of the sidewalk and the road, relocating the public lighting columns, and installing signage.

Regarding this action, González de Zárate recalled that “several months ago, work was already carried out on the previous section of Avenida Severo Ochoa to start up a second line to pump wastewater to the treatment plant”, a “vital” action that will guarantee that the water reaches its destination at all times, even if there is a breakdown in the main line.

This secondary line has been essential during the first stages of the work to adapt and improve the pumping stations.
