Benidorm celebrates the big day of the festivities with a massive mass and a thunderous mascletà
The day began with a popular hot chocolate gathering and parades by marching bands, before the Church of San Jaime and Santa Ana filled for High Mass, presided over by Canon Vicente Martínez Agulló. The mayor, Toni Pérez, along with the Councillor for Fiestas, Mariló Cebreros, and other members of the municipal council, attended the celebration.
Also present were the Senator of the Kingdom of Spain, Agustín Almodóbar; the Director General of Family, Childhood and Adolescence and Demographic Challenge, Angélica Such; the Regional Secretary for Housing, Sebastián Fernández; and the regional deputies José Ramón González de Zárate, Manuel Pérez Fenoll, and Mario Villar, who joined the presidents of the Comissió and Associació de Penyes, Verge del Sofratge, Susana Martínez and Jonathan López, in the Eucharist. And the queens, Paula Pascual and Aitana Pérez, and their courts of honour, among other representatives of the local festival community.
After the mass, the authorities and festival committees moved to King Jaime I Avenue to witness the first mascletà of the festivities, set off by Pirotecnia Vulcano. With 106 kilos of gunpowder and a seven-minute display, the firework drew applause from the large crowd gathered.
The program continues this afternoon with the solemn procession of the Virgin Mary and, later in the evening, with the singing of the Copletes and a DJ performance in the Town Hall Square.
