Benidorm begins the renovation of the pumping stations and the pipes in Severo Ochoa and Sierra Helada
Benidorm City Council will begin this month of December with a vital intervention for the treatment of wastewater from the town. It is about the renovation of Severo Ochoa and Sierra Helada pumping stations and the need to do so is due to the numerous breakdowns that have occurred over the years in the section of Nápoles street.
This intervention entails the repair of the damaged drive section at the Severo Ochoa station, as well as the creation of a roundabout at the intersection of Camino de Torreros with Severo Ochoa.
The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, who visited the area this morning accompanied by the mayor of Ciclo del Agua, José Ramón González de Zárate, municipal engineers, and the Hidraqua concessionaire, has indicated that the reason for this action "is due to that at the moment we only have one impulsion line instead of two, due to continuous breakdowns, so if the current one were to break we would be left without any and the wastewater would end up in the sea. That's what we want to avoid."
The works will begin this month December and will have an execution period of six months, according to the project. The bidding budget amounts to 1,511,570.91 euros and will be financed by the concessionaire for the management of the Water Cycle, Hidraqua, charged to investment funds.
The work will consist of the conditioning of the Severo Ochoa pumping station, the change of the current pumps and electrical panels, as well as the modification of some elements to improve the operation of the station.
A 300-meter section of the current pipeline that runs through Severo Ochoa in the section between Camino de Torreros and Nápoles Street will also be replaced by a 700-millimeter ductile iron pipe with an interior polyethylene coating. As it has already been said, the first works will begin this month and the conditions will be communicated to the residents as the work progresses. The same will be done with the possible modifications in road traffic in the affected section.
Toni Pérez has stressed that it is a "fundamental" action for the treatment of wastewater in Benidorm "that complements and continues other investments that we have made in different parts of the city to achieve the best possible water management. Once finished, we will once again have two drive lines with full guarantees of operation”.
However, the mayor lamented that "neither the Regional Government nor the Ministry invests in Benidorm what corresponds to them and in the end, it is the city that has to take charge of the lack of investment of both administrations." In this sense, he reiterated his criticism of the EPSAR, an organization subordinated to the Ministry, "which does not invest in the city despite the fact that it receives more than four million from Benidorm every year."
On the other hand, and as an improvement work, the project includes the construction of a new roundabout at the junction of Camino de Torreros with Severo Ochoa, at the height of the well-known 'La Curva del Niño'.
