The art of Óscar Tusquets takes Benidorm model to London Art Biennale

16 February 2017
El arte de Óscar Tusquets lleva el modelo Benidorm a la London Art Biennale

Two works of the project 'Great Benidorm', selected for the contest that opens on March 29

Other pieces of the project will be exhibited in the gallery Room One

Benidorm, and more concretely an artistic reflection of its urbanism and of the life that breathes the city, will be present in the next London Art Biennale of the hand of the artist Óscar Tusquets. Two of the works that form part of the project 'Gran Benidorm' by the Catalan artist have been selected to participate in this event, one of the most important internationally and that takes place in the UK capital from March 29 to March 2. April. Simultaneously, in the London gallery Room One will be exhibited other works of 'Great Benidorm', which was released to the public on October 20 at an exhibition in Barcelona.

Tusquets himself and the mayor, Toni Pérez, have today moved the details of both appointments and have announced that 'Gran Benidorm' in full can be seen in Benidorm in June, at a date yet to be specified. Both have been accompanied at a press conference by the architect Julio Muñoz and the president of Hosbec, Toni Mayor, as the project has the support and involvement of the City Council and Visit Benidorm Foundation.

Tusquets explained that "the motor of this pictorial reflection on Benidorm" was the invitation to participate in an exhibition in London on "overpopulation", and in which the city fit as "exemplary" when it comes to "solving a New problem: mass tourism ". Although this exhibition was not developed, it has done 'Great Benidorm', which includes about 40 works in different supports and elaborated with different techniques.

Thus, there are a score of photographic collages, drawings, oils and watercolors centered on the Ensanche de Levante, which reflect the urbanistic essence of "the vertical city", but also "show that Benidorm is beautiful" and that exhibit "all The life that is in it and that has rarely been explained. "

The mayor has said that it is "motivating" that part of the project 'Great Benidorm' is seen in London and a meeting as relevant as the Art Biennale - where it will share space with about 120 works from 40 countries. On the one hand because it brings a reflection of the city to an audience that does not know it; And another because it approaches Benidorm from the perspective of "reference in the world of urbanism". Pérez has stated that Tusquets, like other architects who "love Benidorm" and who have worked in the city, "prestige her with his work" and also "vehemently defending" even "not easy forums."

For his part, the president of Hosbec has pointed out that 'Gran Benidorm' is also 'a tribute to the vanguard of Benidorm' and a way to 'discover what Benidorm represents'.

Impact of the exhibition in Barcelona

Mayor also referred to the impact of the inauguration of the exhibition 'Gran Benidorm' at the Ignacio de Lasaletta Gallery in Barcelona last October 20. A meeting that brought together architects, artists, writers and other representatives of Barcelona and Catalan culture. Among those attending were architects who have left their stamp in Benidorm as Carlos Ferrater - author of the Paseo de Poniente - Ricardo Bofill - who designed the Park de l'Aigüera - and Oriol Bohigas - who drew the Paseo de Levante.
