Minute of silence in Benidorm after a new victim of sexist violence

21 January 2019
Minuto de silencio en Benidorm tras una nueva víctima de violencia machista

Benidorm has today held a minute of silence at the gates of the City Council to condemn the latest case of sexist violence. The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, and the mayor of Equality, Paquita Ripoll, have led the concentration of rejection of gender violence, accompanied by various councilors of different groups of the corporation, municipal workers and residents of the city.

On this occasion, the victim was a 47-year-old Spanish woman, who was allegedly murdered by her sentimental partner, aged 50, in Zaragoza. The circumstance arises that the victim, a lawyer by profession, had defended his assailant for having murdered his wife, a crime for which he served his sentence and he was released from prison in 2017 on provisional release.

According to the official data of the Ministry of Equality, there are now three women who have died as a consequence of sexist aggressions so far in 2019, and there is one more case under investigation.

The Department of Equality reminds women who may be facing a case of abuse, who can go to municipal services or use the toll-free number 016 against gender violence. The call is not reflected in the telephone bill, but it is advisable to delete it from the list of calls from mobile phones.
