The complete renovation is estimated at 23 million euros, and in almost 9 the first phase between Plaza Triangular and Europa Avenue

The remodeling project of Mediterráneo poses a more habitable avenue with more green and pedestrian areas

28 December 2017
El proyecto de remodelación de Mediterráneo plantea una avenida más habitable y con más espacios verdes y peatonales

The drafting team of the remodeling project of the avenue of the Mediterranean has presented today to the Advisory Council of Urban Scene its proposal of basic document for the integral renovation of this road, and in which also the adjacent streets pending to reform are collected. Broadly speaking, the Esteyco-Guía Consultores UTE project plans to update the avenue to make it more livable, with more green spaces, fully accessible and to operate "as a single platform" in which "pedestrian, seasonal and vehicular".

The remodeling covers more than 1.8 kilometers from Puente Street to the Avenida Atmella del Mar, including the Plaza Triangular and streets such as Valencia or the journalist Emilio Romero. The total cost of the renovation is estimated at 23 million euros, of which approximately 9 correspond to the first phase of the project: the section that runs between Puente Street and Avenida de Europa.

The mayor, Toni Pérez, explained that the second section has a higher cost because "besides being twice as extensive, it includes a lot of work in the subsoil, especially in relation to water infrastructure". A work, he specified, that "has already advanced in the first section to have acted in streets like Orts Llorca or Pérez Llorca."

In this first section of the avenue, in addition to the area for vehicles and for walking, there is a seasonal area in which it will be installed in street furniture and where spaces can be installed for canopies, bicycles, electric chairs or walkers. All these areas, which will happen without curbs or architectural barriers, will be marked by the pavement configuration. On this, for the pedestrian and seasonal areas has opted for non-slip satin tile mainly white and gray, with punctual strips in electric blue. The pavement will be degraded towards the gray to merge with the asphalt of the road, and for its satiny character will give a differentiated appearance to the avenue day and night.

The project proposes different types of lighting and maintain the current rows of plane trees of the avenue, which would be added a second in the seasonal area formed by native trees of lower height. In addition, it is intended that Plaza de la Hispanidad function as a green area with a central space open and passable as a flower bed.

At the proposal of the mayor, the Urban Scene Advisory Council will meet on January 8 to make decisions and address the possible suggestions made by its members, who have more than a week and a half to study the basic project presented today. After this meeting, the drafting team must present the project of execution of the first phase for its bidding.
