Volunteers of the Red Cross and Local Police will attend during the night to those who use this service
Social Welfare enables a space in the Sports City during the cold snap for the homeless
The Department of Social Welfare has enabled the changing rooms of Ciudad Deportiva Guillermo Amor so that the homeless can spend the night during the cold snap that, according to the State Meteorological Agency and the Emergency Coordination Center of the Generalitat, will last from this Thursday afternoon until next Saturday and that will cause a collapse of the temperatures that could leave negative values in the areas near the coast.
The councillor of Social Welfare, Angela Llorca, explained that "we are going to condition the dressing room area because it is equipped with heating system, bathrooms and showers, and it is big enough to allow the installation of about twenty beds." This space will begin to be prepared at 5:00 p.m.
The City Council will provide this service in collaboration with the Red Cross, so that volunteers from the entity and Civil Protection and several local police officers will be responsible for serving people who stay overnight in these municipal facilities.
Llorca indicated that dinner and breakfast will be offered to users, breakfast in the Cafeteria of the Sports City.
The councillor said that "we have contacted the Local and National Police so that if they detect or are informed of the presence of someone sleeping in the street, offer them the possibility of staying overnight in the space we have enabled" . In addition, taxi drivers and the Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC) personnel will be informed to transfer any case they may detect. Llorca has also urged citizens to contact the police "if you know any case" or inform the affected person of the service enabled by the Department of Social Welfare.
In principle, this service will be available until Saturday morning, when the cold snap is expected to return. However, "it will be extended if the meteorological situation requires it".
Before this episode of low temperatures, the Emergency Coordination Center has launched a series of advice to the public so that precautions are taken when using coal, electric and gas stoves. Caution is also requested of drivers in case they see black ice.
