The pedestrianization of the lower part of Tomás Ortuño street enters its final stretch

17 January 2017
La peatonalización de la parte baja de Tomás Ortuño entra en su recta final

In the coming days the planting of the first trees will begin

The works of pedestrianization of Tomás Ortuño that runs between La Garita street and Mercado street have entered in its final stretch. In fact, if the weather conditions allow, the bulk of the work will be completed in a couple of weeks.

This morning the mayor, Toni Pérez; the councilman of Works, José Ramón González de Zárate; and the spokesperson of the group Citizens (C's), Rafael Gasent, have observed the evolution of the work, valued at about 500,000 euros. This pedestrianization, which was proposed by C's, includes the paving of the entire section, the elimination of architectural barriers, the renovation of potable water pipes and the placement of ornamental trees.

According to the municipal technicians, in the next few days the planting of the first trees will begin, which will be of the same species that have already been installed in the streets El Pino and Los Almendros to give "urban homogeneity" to the area.

Meanwhile, the workers are still working on the pavement and improving the potable water and rainwater network. In this respect, the downpipes of the buildings are being connected to the storm collector to prevent water from the roofs of these buildings is accumulated on the sidewalk and making it difficult for citizens to walk.

Pérez pointed out that it is "an important work" that will improve the image and urban scene of a street with commercial vocation and where every day thousands of pedestrians walk.

The mayor recalled that this pedestrianization also affects the stretch of Mercado Street between Tomás Ortuño and Ramos Carratalá, where it will be possible to act thanks to the improvements offered by the company awarded the works.

Once the works are completed and the pedestrianization becomes effective, only residents and vehicles of loading and unloading - in the schedule that is authorized for this activity - can circulate by this section of Mercado and Tomás Ortuño street, while the rest of the traffic will be derived to La Garita and Ramos Carratalá streets. Just at the intersection with this road an access control system will be installed so that only authorized vehicles can continue to circulate in Tomás Ortuño street.
