Minute of silence in Benidorm for the three women murdered in less than 48 hours by their partners

11 March 2019
Minuto de silencio en Benidorm por las tres mujeres asesinadas en menos de 48 horas por sus parejas

At the doors of Benidorm City Hall, a new minute of silence has been celebrated this afternoon as a sign of mourning and protest for the last three victims of gender violence. The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, and the councilor for Equality, Paquita Ripoll, have led the rally, in which representatives of the different political groups and municipal workers have participated.

Last Friday, International Women's Day, a 62-year-old woman was murdered in Madrid with a shotgun by her 81-year-old partner, who later committed suicide. At dawn on Saturday, a 58-year-old woman was murdered in the Malaga town of Estepona by her husband, a British national, in the presence of her 15-year-old son. The last case has been in the town of Vaga in Pontevedra, where a man has killed his wife of 43 years, also in this case with a shotgun.

There are already 12 women victims of sexist violence registered in Spain so far in 2019, and 9 orphaned children. The Department of Equality reminds women who may be facing a case of abuse, who can go to municipal services or use the toll-free number 016 against gender violence. The call is not reflected in the telephone bill, but it is advisable to delete it from the list of calls from mobile phones.
