Benidorm asks the Government and the Generalitat more than 800,000 euros for the damages caused by the rains

The City of Benidorm will request from the Central Government and the Generalitat Valenciana aid amounting to 816,091.59 euros on account of the damages suffered during the heavy rains that took place between 15 and 23 January, affecting several buildings And municipal facilities, public lighting, trees, La Cala Tossal, pumping stations, beaches and the Rincón de Loix health center.

The mayor, Toni Pérez, explained that this request has been decided in an information committee and approved today in Local Government Board, and is made under the Royal Decree-Law 2/2017 of the Central Government and the agreement of the Council of 27 January of urgent measures to mitigate the damages caused by the last storms. In case of receiving these funds, Benidorm will allocate them to repair the damages or to compensate the investment already made to correct them.

Pérez has pointed out that the municipal technicians "have made a valued report of all the damages detected in public spaces". Among these damages are drips, dampness on facades, or leaks in expansion joints or in the metal joinery of El Murtal, Miguel Hernández, Ausiàs March, Aitana, Gabriel Miró, Mestre Gaspar López and Serra Gelada schools.

The mayor has clarified that although the settlement of most of the damage of these spaces "are the responsibility of the Generalitat," the City Council "has acted already or we are in it as a matter of urgency." Some of the damages registered in the schools have also been given in the El Tossalet municipal school and in the administrative extension of Foietes. In addition, the health center of Rincón de Loix also suffered damages, which maintenance is incumbent on the Department of Health, and in which it is necessary to repair the roof overhang.

The mayor recalled that "the storm of rain and wind also caused diseases to 38 trees." Thus, in addition to the fall of some specimens, others had to be partially or totally felled to avoid possible damage to people and property. Perez has pointed out that the replacement of the damaged and withdrawn specimens, from which only the one with historical value could be recovered, "the 'Ficus nitida' of the Elche Park, which can be replanted in the same place when Complete the specific treatment that is being submitted in the municipal nursery.

The force of the rains also caused damage in the Tossal area of ​​La Cala, as evidenced by technical reports that refer to the instability of the slope, especially in the stretch of Luarca Street. The mayor has announced that the City Council "has hired a specialized company to assess the actions to be performed to ensure stability of the slope," and estimated at about 300,000 euros.

As regards water installations, "the rainfall seriously damaged the electrical panel and the remote control system of the rainwater pumping station of the Paseo de Levante", located in Castellón Street; At the same time as "the movements of dunes in the beaches of Levante and Poniente have been solved with affections in the walkways of the lavapies, the structures of games and panels".
