The award-winning teacher César Bona proposes to seize the moment to plan the school of the future

Benidorm APAs analyze the educational model in times of pandemic

Les APA de Benidorm analitzen el model educatiu en temps de pandèmia...

César Bona, considered one of the fifty best teachers in the world, according to the 2014 Global Teacher Prize, gave the presentation 'Humanize education', framed in a working day, organized by the Local Association of APA of Benidorm in collaboration with the Department of Education and that took place yesterday in the Assembly Hall of the City Council.

The session could be followed in the municipal hall, adapted to strict health protocols, and was also broadcast live on the Internet. Among the attendees, the mayor, Toni Pérez; the Councilor for Education, Maite Moreno, and other members of the corporation.

Maite Moreno, welcomed the attendees, highlighted the effort made in the celebration of this day by the Local Association of APA and the election of César Bona as a speaker that, she recalled, was raised in a conference the previous year. Toni Pérez took the floor to thank the “constant activity” of the associations of parents of students, precisely “in times of COVID”. The mayor valued "the resilience of the educational community" of Benidorm that has known how to adapt to changes "however difficult they may be."

Pérez valued the "responsibility" of the parents "involved with education" and the "exemplary and effective" behavior of the entire Benidormense society, which made it possible to overcome the previous year and be able to start the present one. A "success" that starts from "an individual commitment that adds to a whole collective challenge".

After the mayor's introduction, a round table was held that, under the title 'Education in times of COVID', brought together Sara López (CEIP Puig Campana), Marc Antoni Pérez (IES Beatriu Fajardo de Mendoza), Pablo Jiménez (center of studies 3Catorce) and Rosa Ana Calvo (CC Nuestra Señora de los Dolores), moderated by José Francisco Pérez Sellés, professor at Beatriu Fajardo de Mendoza

Then, in his lecture, César Bona, focused on the times lived by the pandemic caused by COVID-19. And how a "structure we were used to" has faltered. The speaker predicted that the current situation will lead to a "significant transformation" in many fields of society such as economics or medicine or virology and, of course, also in education.

Bona stated that the goal of education is to give our children "tools to grow" and "know how to relate to people and the world in which they live." Regarding the pandemic, he pointed out that it may be "an opportunity" to rethink the school we want and pointed out critical failures such as those that occur in the jump from Primary to Secondary Education, or the percentage of failure of ESO in which " one in four students does not finish their studies ”.

César Bona advocated for a school where "families participate" and can be educated in dialogue and respect for diversity. A school to which children "want to return the next day", in which teachers and parents work side by side because "it is at school where society can begin to improve".

César Bona has a degree in Teaching and a degree in English Philology from the University of Zaragoza. Among other awards, he has been awarded the Magister of Honor by the Public School Platform and the José de Calasanz Cross.
