Benidorm opens the funeral chapel of the former mayor Miguel Pérez Devesa in the Plenary Hall

10 July 2017
Benidorm abre la capilla ardiente del exalcalde Miguel Pérez Devesa en el Salón de Plenos

The mayor emphasizes the vocation of public service of the deceased and his constant interest "to make city"

The funeral will be tomorrow at 11:00 am in the church of San Jaime and Santa Ana

The funeral chapel of the former mayor of Benidorm Miguel Pérez Devesa, that has been installed in the Plenary Hall of the City council, has been open to the public this noon. The coffin with the remains of the mayor of the city for more than three years have been received at the gates of the town hall building by the mayor, Toni Pérez, and representatives of different groups of the corporation. All of them have transferred their condolences to the relatives of the deceased, for whose death have been decreed two days of official mourning.

As soon as the funeral chapel is opened, friends and neighbors from Benidorm have begun to parade, who have wanted to say goodbye to the doctor and former politician, who leaves a widow and six children.

Speaking to the media, the mayor stressed that Miguel Pérez Devesa was a "good man, affable, with sense of humor and a great mayor." Specifically, he was in charge of the City Council between January 8, 1974 and May 16, 1977, "very complicated moments" of transition and prior to it. Times, Pérez said, "in which the change of system in Spain was already seen" and in which Benidorm "began to have the possibility of consolidating itself as that tourist destination that was later and is still today."

Pérez has assured that Miguel Pérez Devesa was "one of the mayors" who knew "to read the reality perfectly at the time and continue applying the work perhaps initiated by others, but with his stamp and his personal imprint." During his years in the City Council "he also had the opportunity to make viable important projects for the city".

The mayor has pointed out that the deceased always maintained "the umbilical cord" with citizens and municipal activity, "permanently making city" and contributing with "ideas and projects" regardless of "who was in charge of the City Hall."

With a "positive vision in a positive tone", Miguel Pérez Devesa "tried to contribute his management experience" and "made the service to others his raison d'être", both in his facet as a doctor and as a politician.

The funeral chapel will be open today until 10:00 pm. The funeral will be held tomorrow Tuesday, July 11, at 11:00 am, in the church of San Jaime and Santa Ana.
